Open Question: Did western states like Cali,nevada,Arizona, get there names from mexico before the u.s. took control of them?

Like alot of the city names that are also there like, las angeles, San deigo, las Vegas, sanfransico? Were these towns actually developed when that part of the country was still Mexico and they just kept there names, cause otherwise I don't see why Americans would make towns and give them Spanish names?...
